The Making of the Truth or Consequences Series
The Truth or Consequences Series was created during a residency in New Mexico in October 2019. Outside in the desert, I worked on body-size unstretched canvas. Because the canvas was unstretched, each media I applied to the surface caused buckling and wrinkling, an intentional part of my desire to think about the surface as a parallel for skin. My process included scraping, flooding, and burning these works with the intent to impart the making process - or the life experience - onto the canvas. The end result of a heavily impacted, wrinkled surface that is un-taught, loose, and not quite square calls to mind how the skin on our bodies reflects back our internal and external experiences. How resilient is the body? When our bodies show signs of aging or trauma, such as sagging, wrinkling, stretch marks, or scars, what does it expose about who we are?
This series has been featured in several group and solo exhibitions, and a portion of the series has been collected by Kaiser corporate.
